Event Review: Men’s arms only single sculls

The reigning world champion Dominic MONYPENNY (AUS) lived up to expectations to be the first qualifier through to the finals of the arms only men’s single scull event. The 45-year-old Tasmanian immediately blasted ahead of the rest of the competitors in the first heat - leaving them battling it out for second place.

China’s LUO Xiao Hui got also got off to a good start and looked like finishing in second place but a problem with his seat around the 500m mark forced him to drop out of the race. In order to go through to the repechage for another chance to qualify for the finals, LUO must re-row the course this afternoon at 1.54pm to ‘experience a similar fatigue’ to the other competitors.

If he does reach this afternoon’s repechage he will be joined by Jeff STANFIELD (CAN), who finished second in heat one ten lengths behind MONYPENNY, as well as Spain’s Luis Miguel CASTRO CERMONE, Sascha ADRIAN (GER) and Croatia’s Josip FRISCIC.

Two-time World Championship bronze medallist Ron HARVEY (USA) gave himself a good chance of making the podium for the third time by winning the second heat in 5:48.69. Great Britain’s Shaun SEWELL looked very strong over the first 800m and looked like giving HARVEY a run for his money until his pace slowed in the last phase of the race and he was overtaken by Simone MIRAMONTI (ITA) and France’s Pierre PAUGAM. Brazil’s Moacir RAUBER and WONG Wo Chau (HKG) finished fifth and sixth respectively and will now go through to tomorrow’s repechage with the other race-losers.

Damit ist Sascha Adrian als Vierter des 1. Vorlaufs am Samstag, 26.08.2006, im Hoffnungslauf gefordert, wo ein zweiter Platz zum Einzug ins Finale ausreicht.

Event Review: Men’s arms only single scull repechage

Jeff STANFIELD (CAN) and Pierre PAUGAM (FRA) were neck-and-neck on the finish line in first of the men’s arms only single scull repechages. There was less than a second between the two as they crossed the line in first and second to claim their places in Sunday’s (August 27) final.

China’s LUO Xiao Hui, who was forced to re-row his heat alone yesterday in order to take part in today’s repechage after his boat broke during the original heat, just missed out on qualifying for the final after placing third.

In the second repechage, Britain’s Shaun SEWELL rowed a superb race to claim a place in the final. Italy’s Simone MIRAMONTI took the early lead, with Croatia’s Josip FRISCIC close behind. But SEWELL upped his pace midway through the race to pull into the lead and claim victory. The 31-year-old Londoner finished the race in 5:43.03, which was a good four seconds quicker than MIRAMONTI in second place and almost ten seconds faster than STANFIELD, who won the first repechage.

All four will now meet defending world champion Dominic MONYPENNY (AUS) and 2005 bronze medallist Ron HARVEY (USA) in the final.

Spain’s Luis Miguel CASTRO CARMONE, Josip FRISCIC (CRO), WONG Wo Chau (HKG), Sascha ADRIAN (GER), Moacir RAUBER (BRA) and LUO will contest the B final.

Event Review: Men’s arms only single sculls (AM1x)

Australia’s Dominic MONYPENNY looked strong in winning the final of the men’s arms only single sculls at the 2006 World Rowing Championships. MONYPENNY stormed home rating 49 strokes a minute to retain the world title he won for the first time in Gifu, Japan, last year.

The 2005 bronze medallist Ron HARVEY (USA) went one better this year to win silver at Dorney Lake, Eton. The real race was behind the leaders for the bronze medal. Both Jeff STANDFIELD (CAN) and Shaun SEWELL (GBR) were looking strong, but SEWELL finished better to win bronze, 1.62 seconds ahead of the Canadian.

Quotes from Dominic MONYPENNY (AUS, gold), Ron HARVEY (USA, silver) and Sean SEWELL (GBR, bronze), Men’s arms only single sculls

Quotes from Dominic MONYPENNY (AUS), Ron HARVEY (USA) and Sean SEWELL (GBR) after they finished first, second and third respectively in the men’s arms only single sculls.

Dominic MONYPENNY (AUS) - gold medallist, men’s arms only single sculls

On the race: "It was a good race, but atrociously managed on my part. I was very untidy."

Ron HARVEY (USA) – silver medallist, men’s arms only single sculls

On the race: "It was a good race. It means that all the training I’ve done throughout the year has paid off for me. I had a problem with the pontoon and didn’t have a particularly good start, but otherwise the race went well."

Sean SEWELL (GBR) - bronze medallist, men’s arms only single sculls

On the race: "I saw Canada [who finished in fourth place] there and had to pull myself through a bit. It’s fantastic, I’m overwhelmed, I was in hospital three months ago and there were other people after my spot."

On the gold and silver medallists in the men’s arms only single sculls: "Dominic’s the man, he’s a real champion, and Ron’s been doing it a long, long time too, so I’ve still got a lot in me."

On meeting Cherie BLAIR (GBR), wife of the British Prime Minister Tony BLAIR (GBR), after the race: "It was completely unexpected to meet Cherie Blaire, not expected at all. I was taken by surprise and thought I should take my glasses off."
