Event Review: Men’s arms only single sculls (AM1x)

Australia’s Dominic MONYPENNY looked strong in winning the final of the men’s arms only single sculls at the 2006 World Rowing Championships. MONYPENNY stormed home rating 49 strokes a minute to retain the world title he won for the first time in Gifu, Japan, last year.

The 2005 bronze medallist Ron HARVEY (USA) went one better this year to win silver at Dorney Lake, Eton. The real race was behind the leaders for the bronze medal. Both Jeff STANDFIELD (CAN) and Shaun SEWELL (GBR) were looking strong, but SEWELL finished better to win bronze, 1.62 seconds ahead of the Canadian.

Quotes from Dominic MONYPENNY (AUS), Ron HARVEY (USA) and Sean SEWELL (GBR) after they finished first, second and third respectively in the men’s arms only single sculls.

Dominic MONYPENNY (AUS) – gold medallist, men’s arms only single sculls

On the race: „It was a good race, but atrociously managed on my part. I was very untidy.“

Ron HARVEY (USA) – silver medallist, men’s arms only single sculls

On the race: „It was a good race. It means that all the training I’ve done throughout the year has paid off for me. I had a problem with the pontoon and didn’t have a particularly good start, but otherwise the race went well.“

Sean SEWELL (GBR) – bronze medallist, men’s arms only single sculls

On the race: „I saw Canada [who finished in fourth place] there and had to pull myself through a bit. It’s fantastic, I’m overwhelmed, I was in hospital three months ago and there were other people after my spot.“

On the gold and silver medallists in the men’s arms only single sculls: „Dominic’s the man, he’s a real champion, and Ron’s been doing it a long, long time too, so I’ve still got a lot in me.“

On meeting Cherie BLAIR (GBR), wife of the British Prime Minister Tony BLAIR (GBR), after the race: „It was completely unexpected to meet Cherie Blaire, not expected at all. I was taken by surprise and thought I should take my glasses off.“
